            COYOTE CALLS - PREDATOR CALLS

Predator hunting, especially coyote hunting is, in most areas, is a year round sport. For that reason, most coyote hunting takes place in late winter when other hunting seasons have ended. Not a particularly difficult hunt, most coyotes and predators are hunted ambush style. Start with an area where coyotes or the predator of choice is known to roam. Locate a good vantage point with clear visibility. Predators are hunters as well and all have a keen sense of smell that assist them in locating prey as well as danger. So, you should sit face into the wind or at worst a position where the wind crosses and does not take your scent into your field of view. Once situated with a good view and wind position, begin calling to catch the predators attention with game calls that reproduce the sound of injured prey, a territorial challenge or mating call.

Once you spot a coyote or other predator approaching to the sound of the call, remain concealed and very still. Continue calling and, as required, try various sounds to continue encouraging the predator to close distance for a shot that is within range. And, what is in range will depend on your choice of weapon and your ability. With the correct rifle and a lot of practice, range may be hundreds of yards. Or, with a shotgun fitted with a special buckshot choke tube and buckshot perhaps 60 yards is a reliable range. And, then there are the bow hunters that require a much closer shot to be effective.

Using decoys is a great way to increase the enjoyment and success of predator and coyote hunting. A decoy depicting a crippled prey is usually the first choice. Late winter hunting usually coincides with low food supply and many predators will fall for the opportunity at an easy meal. Using combo decoys is another effective strategy. For instance, place 1 or 2 injured prey decoys along with a strategically located predator decoy and you not only appeal to the predator's appetite, but also the sense of competition. It is this sense of competition that will often encourage a approaching predator to rush in with no sense of safety to beat the competition to the meal. And, as with any decoy setup, motion is key. Using motion decoys for predator hunting will greatly increase your success.

In general, predator calls, especially mouth predator calls, are relatively inexpensive. Chances are you will take to the field with several, if not many calls on your lanyard. Practice various calls and get out there and coyote hunt like a pro.
